The secret of window cleaning
Tempered architectural soda-lime-silica glasses are particular capable for modern architectural, structural and solar applications due to their superior mechanical strength and resistance to thermal break. In combination with coatings and lamination, the glasses can fulfill multiple functions in the building envelope such as highly efficient thermal insulation, blocking of solar radiation, gaining and diffusing of light, reducing cleaning efforts, increasing the structural capacity, gaining energy.
The use of these glasses has increased rapidly. Consequently, damages of tempered glasses by scratching, e.g. during the cleaning procedure, have increased. This led to different cleaning regulations for annealed and tempered glasses. In this presentation, we present a measurement technique that allows an in-situ microtribological measurement of total, permanent and elastic deformation and friction force on glass and glass coatings with a high resolution.
